The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 1 located in Delta Junction!
What you will be doing:

Under the general supervision of the Area Wildlife Biologist, the successful applicant will plan and implement bison habitat management to meet the Delta Junction State Bison Range goals and objectives. Duties will include managing a budget, ordering supplies (including seed and fertilizer), operating machinery, performing equipment maintenance, writing annual reports, interacting with diverse user groups to provide wildlife management information, and assisting with wildlife management programs in the Delta Junction area. Normal duties include the management of bison, moose, caribou, sheep, bear, wolf, furbearer, and small game species.

The working conditions you can expect:

This position is based in Delta Junction, Alaska, a small community of approximately 3,000 people situated 100 miles Southeast of Fairbanks on the Richardson Highway. The office is staffed by 4 full-time employees. The successful applicant must be comfortable working long hours operating machinery in challenging conditions, including dusty field conditions, and exposure to cold and wet environments in remote locations. Wildlife management duties will require the operation of farm and heavy equipment, low level flying, travel by boat, ATV's, and handling pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals. Office work will consist of report writing, budget management, selling licenses and issuing hunting permits to the public. The local area also offers exceptional opportunities to pursue a variety of outdoor activities during personal time.
This position requires field work which can involve exposure to large animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying in airplanes and helicopters, travel by boat or skiff, and contact with drugs and chemicals used to immobilize wildlife.

This position routinely travels to remote areas for field work that could last from a day to a week.

We are looking for an individual with the following competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  1. Experience in agricultural sciences or range management, including developing and implementing plans for vegetation production and management.
  2. Working knowledge of and experience operating and maintaining farm/heavy equipment, power tools, firearms, ATVs, and snowmachines.
  3. Experience working independently in remote areas with wildlife or on wildlife-related projects; including aerial surveys and animal capture projects using chemical and physical immobilization.
  4. Experience analyzing scientific data and writing technical reports or management plans for wildlife species.
  5. Experience working in rural areas and interacting with the public, especially hunters and trappers, and preparing presentations for public meetings.

Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.

Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

Special Note:
"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy.
