Summary
The WNY VA Healthcare System is currently recruiting for one Supervisory Social Worker who will be assigned to the (Emergency Department/Inpatient Psych) Unit. The supervisor preforms administrative and clinical services related to social work services within the ED Mental Health Intake and Evaluation Unit (MHIEU) and the inpatient psychiatry unit.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship
- Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
- Education
- Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
- Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited
- A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work
- Verification of the degree can be made by going to to verify that the social work degree meets the 3 accreditation standards for a masters of social work
- Licensure or Certification
- Licensure Requirement: You MUST be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level (LCSW) - and must be able to provide supervision for licensure
- English Language Proficiency
- Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English
- May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria)
- Grade Determinations for Social Worker - GS-12: You must possess one year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level
- Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment
- Examples of specialized experience at the GS-11 include - but are not limited to: assessing and documenting identified behaviors or symptoms of abuse - neglect - exploitation and/or intimate partner violence
- use of clinical social work skills
- maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality per policies - handbooks or directives
- acting as an advocate with appropriate community service providers and agencies when it serves the best interest of the patient and family members/caregiver
- independently assessing the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members - identifying the patient's strengths - weaknesses - coping skills - and psychosocial acuity
- In addition to the experience above - you MUST demonstrate the following Knowledge - Skills and Abilities: Ability to independently organize work - set priorities - and meet multiple deadlines
- Knowledge of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision - consultation - negotiation with other departments and quality improvement
- Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services
- Ability to provide staff training and development
- Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees - team leaders - and managers
- Preferred Experience: Inpatient Psychiatry and Emergency Department experience highly desired

Duties
- VA Careers - Licensed Clinical Social Worker: Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Supervisory Social Worker - Duties: Provides clinical and administrative supervision to social work staff assigned to the ED MHIEU and inpatient psychiatric unit including but not limited to the following: oversight of mental health evaluations - suicide risk assessments - safety planning - timely and accurate documentation - social work intervention within the ED - case management - and referrals to the facility and community resources
- Scheduling staff in the ED to assure 24/7 MHIEU coverage
- Monitor behavioral health patient flow in the ED and on inpatient psychiatry
- Works with ED staff and/or inpatient psychiatry staff to address issues related to emergency services and provision of care for patients
- Supervise discharge planning to ensure timely and appropriate referrals
- Monitor length of stay - patient discharge follow-up - safety planning ED (SPED) and related performance metrics - implement corrective actions as necessary to ensure adherence to benchmarks
- Provides consultation and collaboration with MHIEU and inpatient psychiatry on difficult patient to resolve obstacles to discharge and/or the treatment planning process
- Develops policies and procedures for program operation and prepares reports and statistics for facility - VISN - and national use
- Exercises supervisory authority and responsibility involving work assignments and review
- Manages and tracks data related to the programs regarding day to day functioning and program evaluation
- Responsible for complying with all federal and local regulations

- Intermittent flex scheduling is offered to meet the needs of the Emergency Department
- Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases - When setting pay - a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade)
- Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave - 13 days of sick leave - 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual - based on prior [work experience] or military service experience
