Join to apply for the Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer role at Foundation

Foundation is developing the future of general purpose robotics with the goal to address the labor shortage. Our mission is to create advanced robots that can operate in complex environments, reducing human risk in conflict zones and enhancing efficiency in labor-intensive industries.

We are on the lookout for extraordinary engineers and scientists to join our team. Your previous experience in robotics isn't a prerequisite it's your talent and determination that truly count.

We expect that many of our team members will bring diverse perspectives from various industries and fields. We are looking for individuals with a proven record of exceptional ability and a history of creating things that work.

Our Culture:

We like to be frank and honest about who we are, so that people can decide for themselves if this is a culture they resonate with. Please read more about our culture here .

Who should join:

  • You like working in person with a team in San Francisco.
  • You deeply believe that this is the most important mission for humanity and needs to happen yesterday.
  • You are highly technical - regardless of the role you are in. We are building technology; you need to understand technology well.
  • You care about aesthetics and design inside out. If it's not the best product ever, it bothers you, and you need to fix it.
  • You don't need someone to motivate you; you get things done.

Why We Are Hiring for This Role:

We are seeking a highly capable and detail-oriented Mechanical Engineer to support the scalable manufacturing of humanoid robots. This role focuses on manufacturing process development, assembly line and tooling design, equipment integration, and design for manufacturability (DFM). The ideal candidate will have a solid foundation in mechanical product design, experience in machined parts manufacturing, and the ability to manage technical projects and work with external equipment integrators to bring complex robotic systems to life.

What Kind of Person We Are Looking For:

  • Design and optimize manufacturing processes for the efficient production of humanoid robot mechanical assemblies.
  • Lead DFM efforts by working closely with design engineers to ensure parts and products are optimized for manufacturing scalability.
  • Design and deploy assembly fixtures, custom tooling, and automation equipment.
  • Support mechanical product design activities, providing input on manufacturing constraints and best practices.
  • Set up and improve assembly lines, including layout design, workstation planning, and ergonomics optimization.
  • Develop detailed manufacturing documentation including work instructions, SOPs, process flows, and quality checks.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external equipment integrators to specify, source, and commission manufacturing equipment and automation systems.
  • Manage small- to mid-scale technical projects, ensuring milestones, budgets, and timelines are met.
  • Perform root cause analysis on manufacturing issues and lead continuous improvement initiatives to increase yield and reduce costs.
  • Coordinate pilot builds and process validation for new product introductions (NPI).

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, ideally in robotics, electromechanical systems, or precision hardware.
  • Strong mechanical product design experience and understanding of electromechanical integration.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., OnShape, SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA) for designing mechanical assemblies, tools, and fixtures.
  • Solid knowledge of DFM principles and mechanical assembly best practices.
  • Hands-on experience in machined part manufacturing, including material selection, tolerancing, and process knowledge.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage engineering projects, track deliverables, and coordinate with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience collaborating with equipment integrators, vendors, and automation partners to deliver turnkey manufacturing solutions.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement tools.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in humanoid robot or complex mechanical system production.
  • Experience in setting up smart manufacturing systems, MES/ERP integration, and Industry 4.0 initiatives.
  • Ability to lead multi-disciplinary engineering teams during production ramp-up and scaling.
  • The annual compensation is expected to be between $135,000 - $1,000,000.
  • Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
